Researchers from many countries have collaborated to establish a noble strategy to treat Huntington′s disease. The most recent research demonstrated that the protein retained its original function even after being changed from its disease-causing form to its disease-free state, creating additional challenges for treating Huntington′s disease. Journal of Clinical Investigation Insight published the findings online.

Huntington′s disease is caused by cleavage in mutant huntingtin close to the stretched polyglutamine. It is crucial to selectively remove the disease-causing protein while keeping the ones still operating correctly because huntingtin protein is necessary for the growth and regular operation of the brain.

The study team demonstrated that huntingtin delta 12, a converted version of huntingtin resistant to the protein′s ends cleaving, reduced the symptoms of the disease while preserving its normal functioning. The study was welcomed since it will undoubtedly inspire newer approaches to treat Huntington′s illness without impairing huntingtin′s vital function. (News-medical.net, Sep 2 2022)
